Hanzo is the current jonin (leader) of the Ueno Shinobi Clan in Senjokuni. Gruff and often strictly business, Hanzo runs his clan well with discipline and subtlety, not brute force. Though often a man of a strict moral honor code, Hanzo compromised the clan's assassination standards in recent times in an effort to help them rebuild faster after an attack by Lord Ogata nearly wiped them out.

As revealed in Chapter 7, Hanzo is Hikari's uncle, who banished her after she failed to defeat him in a fight for leadership. His choice of exiling instead of executing her appears to be out of compassion and mercy rather than malice or vengeance. As he confided in one of his men, his only wish is for Hikari to be free and happy -- something he appears to believe is most probable in a life outside of the Ueno clan.
